magical movie monday! (vol. 5)

Tuesday I caught The King's Speech. Of course it's good! Look at it! Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter. Please! Great period piece, and quite informative (although I am curious about how much of the truth was stretched here) film about Prince Albert's speech impediment and how he worked with an amazingly vibrant speech therapist to overcome his insecurities and actually become King George VI.

Telling you that this film is fabulous isn't enough though. Here are my bulleted reasons:

Acting is SUPERB! Colin Firth and his expressive brow, mastering this particular 'stutter' is so impressive. Mr. Rush's exuberance is as fun as ever. I don't think I've enjoyed him in anything as Shine.
Costumes and art direction! Helena looks divine as always. The speech therapist's office is in this loft room with this creaky floor and old sofas. It's perfect, and beatuiful.
It portrays a very intimate look inside the Royal mind, and I find that to be touching. Prince Albert never expected to be the monarch, and 50 years before he never would have had to face the obstacles of technological public speaking that he did in the 30s, so it really paints a very interesting portrait of history.

magical movie monday! (vol. 4)

Friday I went to Salem Cinema to see Blue Valentine. Let's just get this out of the way right now: This film is truly a gorgeous duet telling an all too gutwrenching tale of love --- from the amazing passionate beginning and then fast forwarded to the present --- where things are exponentially more realistic and of course, more painful.

I must stop now to say: there is nothing sexually graphic in this film that would get it anywhere near deserving a NC-17 rating (which the Weinstein Company repealed and in the end the film is rated R), much to this reviewer's disappointment! I mean come on guys, I was all twitterpated and must admit to being a little bummed as the film was ending to realize that the under-the-skirt time was what all the fuss was about. Really?! Boo.

Third confession: I REALLLLY like Michelle Williams. And.. Ryan Gosling is pretty amazing as well. They both have this ability of seeming pretty ordinary while also being quite charismatic. It strikes me as odd that Mr. Gosling wasn't nominated because really, it is the dance between them that is most impressive. To all you hopeless romantics out there, you may want to skip over this one because it's pretty brutal. To the rest: GO SEE IT! It's a quality film, beautifully shot, richly genuine, and has the most adorable scene with Ms. Williams tap dancing to Mr. Gosling's ukele accompanied tune.

Money well spent.

Fabulous Film Friday ate Magical Movie Monday! (vol. 3)

One of my dear friends loves The Brown Bunny and convinced me to put it on my Netflix cue. I find Vincent Gallo to be intriguing -- those piercing eyes, his willingness to be vulnerable and of course, he's kinda creepy, right?

Belive me when I tell you: This movie is not for everyone. When it was orginally screened at the Venice Film Festival Roger Ebert stormed out of it exclaiming that it was the WORST movie that had ever been shown in the Venice Festival's history. Later Gallo cut the movie down, and Ebert has changed his tune. So this movie is for some...including me! I absolutely loved it.

Gallo unabashedly slowed the concept of time down with this movie. Long still shots that go on for minutes at a time showing the viewer very common place experiences like driving a car. Sometimes the shots are through a windshield --- with the additions of windsplattered bugs on the lens and all. The film's quietness adds an intensity, and with Gallo you never know what's really going to happen. Is he going to kill someone or himself?

Gallo is self-indulgent in his insistence that the viewer go along on this long drawn out tale, but hey, most of the world's best artists are self-indulgent, no? There is a VERRRY explicit scene that includes one Miss Chloe Sevigny, but don't let that keep you from this little gem.

magical movie monday (week 2)

1. So last time when I wrote about 'True Grit' I should have also made my comments about a movie I saw the very same day -- Love & Other Drugs. It was playing at Northern Lights so Jennifer and I decided it was worth a shot.

I need to take a moment and confess that I am one of the most sentimental, schmaltziest people in the universe because when I tell you that this movie made me cry it had much less to do with the film's content and much MUCH more to do with my excessive emoting.

That said, Love & Other Drugs is a pretty charming movie albeit cliche. The characters are underdeveloped but it's pure fun to see Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal rolling around in bed together. Plus! Anne's character has an amazing apartment -- quite drool worthy.

2. I've loved Jesse Eisenberg since The Squid and the Whale. I feel like he's an edgier, less predictable Michael Cera, which I like. Believe me when I tell you he does an extraordinary job in The Social Network at being uber-geeky, an asshole, all the while being compelling. Is this a stretch for him? I'm not so sure but that doesn't deflect from the film at all.

From start to finish this film is fascinating - intellectual property, nerdy code, secretive Ivy League clubs, going from having nothing to being a billionaire - it's all riveting. It wasn't until the end of the film that I fully understood who's point-of-view we were looking through; I believe the film carries itself as if its Mark Zuckerberg's story. It's easy to think we're meant to sympathize with his tender brokenheart. So what if he's borderline Aspergers, he's still brilliant and cute. You think that right up until you realize how he makes his enemies.

I do feel a need to stress how this is a very fictionalized version of the truth. But hey, the truth is often far less salacious. For what this movie aims to do - to entertain me and make me think - it does a damn fine job. Bravo!

2011 will embark upon my new wild idea (that I'm hoping won't fall by the wayside of laziness): keeping a movie log. I have been inspired by some dear beloved friends that love movies as much as me, and by a renewed love of film. Watching movies at Salem Cinema, Northern Lights, Cinnebarre and with Netflix recently has been such a pleasure. Plus, I have already watched a few greats this year so let's just have a little weekly chat about this, okay? Great.

This is our first time but I must catch us up on the year thus far.

1. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

First time watching this one, and it was pretty fun! If we could take a moment to comment on the gorgeousness that is Paul Newman followed by a young pretty boy Robert Redford. The remarkably 60s day romp on the bicycle to Burt Bacharach's epic "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" is one of the silliest schmaltz-that-becomes-charming scenes I have seen.

I have avoided Westerns my entire life. Never could hack the setting, the filth, the rudeness, all the horses. Meh. Not for me. As I age I am finding a fondness pop up from time to time. It could have been my thrift found turquoise cowboy boots that helped turn the corner for me. Whatever it is, I find these shootouts behind bushes intriguing; I find the attire increasingly appealing as well.

2. Charade

This year for New Years we laid in bed watching movies. First Butch Cassidy and then Charade. First time for this film as well. It was incredibly charming because both Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are fantastic. It has a Hitchcock-esque plot but without his usual sinister edge. I am not difficult to fool, but I will also say that I was unsure about Cary's character's true identity throughout. A wonderful way to spend the first day of the year.

3. True Grit (2010)

My fantastic friend Jennifer watched my ladybears so Ryan and I could go see this movie. Seeing that we started the year with a western it seemed just fine by me to continue on this road and see the new Coen brothers movie, True Grit. I often feel like it's impossible to have a good child actor, yeah I'm just wrong. Hailee Steinfeld does a remarkable job as a very grown-up 14-year old woman who "takes care of business."

Jeff Bridges charms me somehow. Could have been back in The Fisher King that I wholeheartedly decided I liked the fellow, but Mr. Bridges clearly has earned his keep in film. I seriously enjoyed every moment of True Grit. The sassy girl, the grossly drunk and slovenly Rooster, and the Texas Ranger. Couple good characters with a winning script by the Coen brothers and yeah... it's good yo. Maybe the untouched country appeals to me more, or the makeshift roughing it gear, whatever it is that makes it a Western is also making it good.

On a side note, one of the 'bad guys' in this movie sports some woolly chaps that should they ever come into my possession, trust me, I can rock the shit out of them!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILY! <3>

Emily has been feeding my soul with good cinema talks for days now and I cannot help but update my Top 50 Films List! Of course now I am going to stop kidding the universe and make it into my Top 100. Yes, I do have 100 favorite movies but am trying to take my time to add carefully...I'll link to it once I've finished it. (you might be saying ... "Gabrielle, you can NEVER finish the list. Your lists are always moving and changing". and then I say, 'Damn, you're so right!') (I've linked to it now even though it is NEVER complete!)

I also have to mention two very important things: I love the name Felix. ANDDDD... my spirit is flying high today. The pains of this week have been deep and mourned, but just like an unfortunate slide into home for the game winning run that would have won the game but instead you were tagged out --- it's time to stand up, dust myself off and you know... hang out in the dugout?? I wish this analogy had taken me to a different place!

I've been adding to my Happy List again (as seen on yesterday's post). I have found that going through the list is so COZY. Cozy is a big deal to me lately. It reminds me of Level 2 in Shambhala where you learn about the strength of your cocoon -- all those habitual comforts and shields we have blockading us from truly experiencing the present. We all do it for different reasons. Sometimes I have to indulge a lot before I can sit up with a good strong back and work on discipline.

So I do! Rewatching my favorite movies. Listening to old cds. Going through old clothes. Seeing fantastic old friends. Reading old letters. When I clean up my artspace I find a myriad of sentiment. My heart is so tender and open. I fear for its safety so I just want to take a giant quilt of all of these cozzzzzy things and burrito swaddle myself in it.

I feel that it's getting close to time to break out of the shell a bit and explore some new surroundings. Maybe that will be just in time for autumn?

I have had a heaping spoonful of joy these last few days and it's warmed my soul. I am feeling a sparkly tingling that has a very strong resemblance to that of the elusive inspiration. I'm all bubbly like hot jam, but I'm so tingly that it has made me sleepy.

The clouds and the cool rolled in today and it has given my fluttery brain a day of rest which I appreciate. All that hot summer sun has been baking hope and joy into me and now I just need a moment to figure out what to do with it. I have been cleaning and decluttering the cocoon that I live in. What a difference a weekend makes. And now I have Dinah Washington's illustrious voice in my head... sighs all around.

I have two very important suggestions for you:

1. Watch A Single Man. I am still trying to replay the entire film in my head. If you were to ever ponder the kind of movies that FLOOR me, the kind of movies that make me REMEMBER why I adore cinema and life and beauty, well this is one of the finest examples.

2. DO the Cascade Head Trail hike just north of Otis on the coast. This is LITERALLY the view I witnessed yesterday. It's SICK yo!

Something pithy to say . . . something that expresses how much I have mulled around my thoughts. I sit and I wait for clever little phrases extracted from my brain to magically meet my fingertips as I type . . . but nothing.

I have been struggling. Heart and mind feeling so discordant, I have opted to do nothing. I suppose ‘doing nothing’ has turned into my schtick, which honestly, I would have never imagined for myself. Such a go-getter/do-er/mover&shaker I once was now seems so distant. I suppose that agent little creature has grown tired over the years, and now she prefers to just sit --- well lay, actually.

This weekend was filled with laying in the sun, which is on my top 5 favorite things in the universe, which in no particular order are:

1. Hot tubs.
2. Ginger.
3. Laying in the sun.
4. My girls.
5. Art & sex.

The list of course, always changes, but I’ve been humored by the idea that hot tubs and ginger always come to mind before art & sex. Beer is on there too on some days but right now it just sounds so bloaty. It is the sun that reigns in there the most I will say out of parental honesty. It does something to me now that I’ve never known before. I believe it simplifies things.

p.s. i would like to go back and add more things to my favorite all time things list right now (like flowers and music and dancing of course, but i will refrain. other days those things will win out.)

A moment of rare clarity hit me last night. Have I always been this way? Am I destined to stay this way? Both questions are curious to me. Perhaps the answers do not matter and it’s really just in the way I deal with how I am now that shapes who I am. Oh purposeful ambiguity, how I love thee… It may seem ridiculous to many, but I believe I honestly need giant neon flashing lights helping to guide me down a fruitful path.

While I love organization and its wondrous contraptions, there is something very important to me about seeing it all. Every little atom of inspiration must be laid out (or in some occasions contained in a fish bowl of curiosities). From random old lightbulbs to broken Mardi Gras beads to Trivial Pursuit pies to carousel tokens – they all need their moments in the limelight. I think jars and beakers and flasks and milk bottles of gorgeous little things would make my life more charming.

My lovely delicate flower, Hannah Tuesday, turned 6 on the first Tuesday of the month. We celebrated with a new short hair cut! She’s so big!! It’s almost as if I am looking at a teenager with her thoughts and dreams flurrying around in her mind so quickly. I want to smother her with love and comfort and give her what she needs. Thankfully she’s still quite the cuddler. She’ll curl up with her dad while he’s playing some video game. She’ll have her headphones on shuffling through her favorite songs, snapping her fingers are belting out some lyrics. She would be an enigma to me if she were not my own daughter. She is a Pisces, I remind myself as I try to trap her little spirit in a context I can understand her. I will learn to swim alongside her.

the unexpected sun this morning was spec.tac.u.lar. honestly. the downpour that just happened was too. i stayed up too late last night watching 'american idol', p runway, adding music to my shuffle, and chatting up one of the loveliest people on earth. we're coming up with some exciting spring plans! spring training has begun! (yes, the baseball kind) i'm also got some percolating ideas for artmaking.

i am beyond tired, but i somehow wanted to express my endless well of gratitude for the good people around me. i. flipping. love. you! and you too! and even you.

I don’t embroider, but I do like the word, and I DO love the idea of sitting quietly with my hooped fabric and pushing and pulling a needle back and forth. My mother cross-stitched. I think it’s a strange little hobby with all those x’s of floss. I love love love the thread boxes though --- those little cards which with those slotted notches to hold onto the loose ends. (it's not my photo, it's skitzo leezra's)

I also really REALLY adore Angela’s wedding dress from one of my new favorite shows Bones. The hood? I mean c’mon! It’s GENIUS!

Finally, just to get you all salivating with spring fever, here’s my list thus far of this year’s magical garden: deep purple tulips, columbine, peonies (some mystery color that B freecycled for me last year, and a white one!), poppies of all persuasion, cosmos, lupine, hollyhock, hydrangea, Japanese irises, some super exciting dark red dahlias, feverfew, deep orange canna lilies, amazing ranunculus, bee balm, scarlet flax, echinacea, heliotrope, and some whimsical sweet pea.
Artichoke, Anaheim peppers, giant pepper for chile rellenos, corn, carrots, peas, pole beans, catnip, broccoli, acorn squash, pumpkins, cucumbers…

I think I’m going to get snapdragons too, that’s right! I like them a lot, okay? Jeeesh! A new begonia if my gorgeous one from last year is gone, and a tomato plant. Some herbs would be nice – just thyme, basil, mint, and rosemary.

I suppose that sounds like a lot, right? You’d think I had acres and acres, but really it’s just some patches in a very small front and back yard. Needless to say, I am way into this. Imagining all the gorgeous flowers, daydreaming about what will come up from last year… The hope of anew is infectious! Spring Fever babyyyy!

Ms. Clementine Astrid turned 4 yesterday. She still has cradle crap or whatever it’s called. She wants to change her name to Lisa or Clara or Stacy depending on the day you ask her. She believes that she’s smarter than me and often corrects me on things. When you tell her the plan is something other than she wants, she’ll just simply open her mouth and start screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! And boy does she have a set of pipes too! She gets LOUD.

She picks out a line of a song like ‘nothing can break this’ (so it's from a Barbie movie -- sue me!) and will sing it repeatedly and run around in circles which is also known as dancing and then magically change the words. She loves snowglobes and birds, and boobies, and chocolate milk, and ICE --- oh she loves ice! She tickles my heart and often rescues me from sudden spurts of despair by merely rubbing my back when she hugs me. Such a sweet sweet sweet little bundle!

took down my christmas tree this past weekend, and decided that i missed it too much. so thanks to jacob, i have a year round tree of wonder! not christmasy at all really, but more of a dedication of beauty and intrigue. yeah, i'm as grandiose as the next dreamer! it's true!

i'll be posting pics periodically that i'm going to turn into 2011's calendar! so yeah.. 365 wonders to see from lovely treeeeeee... sigh. i'm planning to change it up every couple months, sometimes coordinate with the seasons or holidays, and sometimes just stick to the oddities that delight gab! it's going to be a spectacular year!

ok, it's been later. i think i just wanted to add (very quickly) that one of the greatest things about making things lately has been that i've needed to gather alllll my bizarre little trinkets from around the house. raiding the girls' toys, picking out all the COOL things from the various change dishes or junk drawers --- truly that in and of itself is an art process. what makes the cut, and what doesn't?

it's taken me a long time to come to grips with my 'collecting' of things. i know it's always an adjustment for ryan to deal with, but i think it all boils down to me wanting to still play. little itty bitty toys and pieces, old and colorful all infused with the scent of inspiration --- it is my playground!!

There is something so contagious right now: joy! Warm, effortless, joy is just spewing out of people right now. I'm trying to do a little squirreling away of it for future times, but I think I may just eat it all immediately! The FOOD, the treats, the little berries, adorable ornaments, finding ways to get together, the lights!, the eggnog, the MINT!!, the holiday movies! Seriously guys, I got it bad yo! It's oh-so-cold out, and I'm in a cozy cornucopia of treasure & inspiration.

Finally made Jennifer's gift last night. So fulfulling to have a few moments of quiet to contemplate creating again. It's so darn tootin'-cold out so it's impossible to work in the shop. I've comandeered our underused dining room table and have spread all my trinkets and glitter and clippings EVERYWHERE! Teehee! I'm sure Ryan doesn't mind, nor the girls, when I prohibit them from touching anything!! (including their own little broken toys that I've claimed as mine!!)

I really want you all to see my tree this year. Let's just say that it's a quintessentially 'Gab' altar to beauty! It has all these little sparkly things and random items from our lives pinned on with love and... JOY!

It's a good time all around and I'm BIG on the sending out the love this year! You feeling it??

HARRY POTTER! I’m definitely in some weird hypnotic haze with Harry lately. The girls can always persuade me to watch a Harry Potter movie. ALWAYS. Curled up with them seeing Harry fly around is really about the best thing ever!
Hannah Snuggles. Where do kids learn how to snuggle? She’s not afraid to plant herself in the crook of your arm and hold on for dear life should she be on the edge of the couch.
Hot cocoa. LOVE that it’s cocoa season. YUM! YUM! So warm and lovely. So utterly perfect.
Harmony – especially Beatles’ harmony. Playing Beatles Rockband with my fave people is one of the finest things in life. Why can certain music ease your soul so perfectly?

I have to convey to you in some magical way that will actually make you ***feel*** this ---- right here in my stomach, and the back of my throat is a burbling, tickling (hunger? nahhh) --- it's inspiration.

I felt it so strongly last night, and I decided to stage my own wondrous dream of my junk drawer, which is pretty much ripped off of Paho Mann's piece. Of course, dear Paho's drawer is the sanitized version of my gallimaufry collection of randomness. After taking pics, I started making some weird spring girl with a spare bead and a Play Mobil ponytail. Then I needed to touch my clippings, and move them around, and feel like I was creating something new. Are these new sewn creations missing something? Should I also be working on some stand alone collages?

Here's my drawer, and please, you'd be ridiculous to think that these things are just thrown in here. ;)

Sunday Jennifer & B & I went to see Eunice Parsons' show, and a film about her creative process at the Hallie Ford. She's a firecracker of spirit! Just thiking about being that dedicated and in love with making art when you're 92 just about does me in----I mean really, HOT DAMN!

Tuesday's 5 Things: 5 Pieces of Clothing You Have Been Attached To

I am sentimental and attached to pretty much everything I have, which makes for quite a time to organize and tidy. Purging is a big deal for me, consequently, and when it comes to clothes, I am always pleased that we have our swaps. I just want my little ditties to go to a good home, you know like a beloved pet or something. There have been several times that I took photos of my clothes before getting rid of them. Sigh...

5 Pieces of Clothing You Have Been Remarkably Attached To

1. Red Velour V-Neck Sweater with Penguin - I *WILL* hunt for the photo with me wearing this beloved sweater. It was PRETTY rad! I had it when I was six-eight. There was an extended period of time that it was missing though, and I'm telling you --- NOTHING was more gratifying than its resurfacing!
2. Yellow Paisley Shirt - Thrift store find of the century! I wore it through high school, and I believe I took it to college. It was this interesting kind of rayon that isn't gross, you know the kind? It was probably a men's shirt, but I distinctly remember that it wasn't very long, so maybe it was a pajama shirt? The buttons looked like butterscotch candies. It was divine. When it fell apart, I was so distraught. And yes, I still have it. I must do something with it.
3. Hideous Red Dress with Scotty Dogs - I wore this dress for my first grade school photo. It's ridiculous! It has this little white laced collar, little dogs all over the dress, and one ENORMOUS dog on the bottom left of the dress. At the time though, I was enamored with it. I wore it all the time, and refused to let it be thrown away. In fact, I had this equally disturbing (yet adored) dancing bear (that was taller than me, and you put your hands and feet in its straps), and I decided that the bear should wear this dress, and it still did until maybe a couple weeks ago. The sad bear was falling apart so I threw it out. Yes, I did. Ha! The dress I kept for hilarity purposes mainly.
4. Ever-So-Amazing Silver Doc Martens - My first, and actually only pair of Docs. Got them my junior year in high school and they were pretty much my signature shoe/boot (they were 8-eyes) for 5 or so years. SILVERRRRR! I mean really, how cool is that? Of course I would have preferred them to have been glittery, but you know, they were extremely rad! When I moved out of Pamela's I took a photo of them. So so cherished, but in reality I would never wear them again. I must believe someone else is wearing them with love.
5. Red Dansko Clogs - The only item to still be worn of this list. I can't remember what the circumstances were that lead to me getting them. I think it had been a very long time since I had bought new shoes, and with Hannah, I was up on my feet a lot dancing her to sleep, at the park, etc. I missed having a decent amount of flair though, so when I saw these RED patent leather clogs, I knew I was in love ---- and still am.
